General Travel Information

A very comprehensive Cambridge Travel Guide has been compiled on a WikiTravel page which contains a lot of helpful information. Further information about the city of Cambridge can be found here, visa information is available on the UK government website.

By Air

Currently, there are no scheduled air services in to Cambridge Airport (Marshall Airport, Cambridge), but charters and private flights are accepted!

The nearest Airport for regular scheduled flights from Europe and some further destinations is
London Stansted, linked by rail (Cross Country Trains) by an hourly service to Cambridge (takes approximately 20 minutes). Hire cars are available at Stansted,  which is about 25 minutes by road (M11) from Cambridge.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports are both approximately 2 hours away by road or rail (see By Train below), and there are frequent coach connections to Cambridge (National Express, Drummer Street Bus Station) from all three airports. N.B. If taking a taxi be sure to ask to be dropped off at Clare College, Memorial Court in Queen´s Road.

By Train

Eurostar may be a preferred option for those closer to the UK, given the recent disruptions to air travel with strikes and volcanoes it may provide a less stressful alternative.  With St Pancras International station quite literally next door to King's Cross rail station it offers a quick link by train to Cambridge.

Cambridge is very regularly served by two direct links from London (and hence from the South,  South-West,  West and Wales)  -  from
Kings Cross station (First Capital Connect) and from Liverpool Street station (National Express East Anglia).    Journey times vary from 45 to 70 minutes,  with at least one fast train per hour from Kings Cross during the period of the normal working day.

Cambridge Station is about a 25 minute walk from Clare, but buses run every 8 minutes into the centre of Cambridge from where Clare is just a 5 minute walk.  Alternatively, Taxis are readily available, a Cambridge City Centre Map is here. N.B. If taking a taxi be sure to ask to be dropped off at Clare College, Memorial Court in Queen´s Road.

There are regular direct services (
Cross Country Trains) to and from Peterborough and Birmingham,  linking at those stations to services to Scotland,  & the North, North East and North-West of England. Additionally, connections to East Midlands Trains can be made at Ely,  (reached by regular services from Cambridge taking twenty minutes),  to direct services to Manchester and Liverpool. National Express East Anglia services link regularly and directly to Norwich, Ipswich and Kings Lynn. Cross Country Trains operate a direct (20 minute) hourly service to and from Stansted Airport.

By Bus/Coach

All out of town buses or coaches (National Express ) stop or terminate at Drummer Street bus station or Emmanuel Street,  both within an easy 5 minute walk to Clare College. Park-and-Ride buses stop at Downing Street,  or Emmanuel Street depending which route is used.   Cambridge has several excellent P & R sites on the main routes into the City ,  however be advised that the last return buses to all the P and R sites depart central Cambridge shortly after 20:00 on weekdays.

By 'Cycle

We are not suggesting that you cycle all the way,  but Cambridge certainly is Cycle City - with hardly a hill in sight and with many dedicated cycle routes,  for those health conscious/ fitness keen once you are here two wheels is probably one of the best ways to get around. Cycle hire shops include Station Cycles - at the Railway Station - (01223) 307125,  and in the 'Grand Arcade' - (01223) 307655,  and City Cycle Hire in Newnham Road - (01223) 365629.

By Car

If you are travelling by car,  access to Clare College is possible and traffic delays should be minimal after 09:30. Area and local maps for access to Clare College can be found here. The University of Cambridge scrollable map is here. For those with electronic gizmos,  Clare College, Memorial Court and Gillespie Centre is located in Queen's Road and the postcode is CB3 9AJ (please note this is for dropping off only - no parking). Car Parking is available off-site only and must be pre-booked to secure a space - directions/ postcode will be provided on booking.
